Hendry Napa Valley Red Wine 2007
The 2007 Hendry Red is a good candidate for decanting early on. Its aromatics are subtle and elusive at first, locked inside the pleasant grip of fine-grained tannins that will open with air. Velvety mouthfeel hints at the palate weight. Typical for this bottling are low-register aromas of cocoa, eucalyptus and mint, deep blackberry fruit, bittersweet chocolate, spice and a rustic, leathery component. Softer tannins than the 2006 make this a wine with the heft for heavier meats and braises, and a fine companion for a chilly evening.
The 2007 Proprietary Red Wine has an unusual composition of 36% Petit Verdot, 21% Malbec, 21% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cabernet Franc and 11% Merlot that clearly shows that Hendry marches to the beat of a different drummer. But it works. Dense ruby/purple-colored with notes of blackberries, cassis and licorice, it possesses good tannins, a narrowly focused mouthfeel but impressive purity and length. The sweetness of the fruit becomes more apparent with airing. This fascinating wine would be hard to peg in a blind tasting.Score: 92. —Robert Parker, December 2010.
Big, heavy, extracted, tannic and dry. That pretty much sums up this blend of all five Bordeaux varieties, with Petit Verdot in the majority. It's potent in blackberry and black currant flavors, with an undertow of minerals. If I rate a wine 95 points or more (A+), it is a must buy.
