XANADU
CABERNET SAUVIGNON, MARGARET RIVER, AUSTRALIA 2008

Western Australia is located entirely in the south-western-most corner of the country. It encompasses the Margaret River region, which it is located just a three hours drive south of Perth and grows less than 5% of the country's grapes but produces a very significant proportion of the country's best wine.
Some of Australia's best- structured Cabernets, sometimes blended with Merlot, come from this region.
Margaret River's climate is strongly maritime-influenced, as might be expected in a region surrounded by the ocean on three sides. The varied landscape is given character by the abundance of small creeks and gentle valleys, as well as the abundance of native trees, shrubs and flowers, which protect the vineyards from winds blowing in from the ocean.
Xanadu Wines was established by Dr John Lagan, an Irishman, who arrived in Margaret River in 1968 and was inspired by the pioneering spirit of the region. At that time, the potential of Margaret River as one of the world’s finest wine-producing regions was only just being considered. John planted his first vines in 1977. Xanadu has since established a state-of-the-art winery, with vineyards that are low-yielding, and produce a select range of wines. In August of 2005 Xanadu Wines, returned to being family- own being purchased by the Rathbones who has focused on producing premium wines that reflect the true characteristics of the Margaret River region.

Wine Advocate

Matured for 14 months in French oak barriques, 40% new, the 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon has a deep garnet-purple color and moderate to pronounced notes of ripe black currant, mulberries and black cherries over damp loam, Chinese dried plums and cumin seeds plus a hint of oak. Medium to full bodied, it has a medium to firm level of chewy tannins, medium-high acid and just enough fruit concentration, finishing long and earthy. Drink this one now to 2019+.

Score: 90. —Lisa Perrotti-Brown, August 2011.
